Costa Rica: To go or Not to go?

{picture}

When I graduated college, I wanted to go to Costa Rica and teach English. I couldn't find a program in time so I got a job instead and ever since, I have regretted not going.

The time is coming up again, where this can actually be huge and beneficial, but it requires leaving for 6 months to 1 year, and living there.

I need to get the certificate to get a job there and that won't take that long and it costs $1,200 to do it online.

I would go there in January and teach, come back in June or so.

I have always been about getting up and going and moving and going places, but I have never up and left my life for months at a time. Would this really be a scary thing? Would I still come back and go back to my life as normal? I honestly, am scared of leaving. It is never easy to pick up from all your life and your friends and family and go away alone.

But, then again, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and if I don't do it soon, I will most likely never do it and will most definitely regret it.

It is really hard for me to decide.... so I am turning to you....

GO! :o) 6 month is hard to perceive when looking forward..... but they will over so fast, that you wonder if it has really been six months.
Will you be the same? Yes and no, as it will definately make an impact on you, maybe you find out that the path you are already on might be the right one or maybe it makes you take another route.
Ohhh I need to re-read Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken"

I definitely think you should go! I had similar fears about picking up and moving cross-country for grad school and then I was terrified about moving to Honduras for two years for the Peace Corps, but they were both SUCH life-changing experiences that I have never regretted either decision for a second. And after grad school and Peace Corps were done, I moved right back home and resumed my life with the same friends. It was like I had never left - I was a completely different person and viewed the world differently, but I still have the same friends and family. Remember - don't let fear stand in the way of your dreams. What would you do if you could take fear out of the equation? Your answer should be what you do!!

If going to Costa Rica is something that you've always wanted to do, then release all doubts and go! It will be a great experience for you and you can cross it off of your list of things you've wanted to do.

I think you should go. But then again, a lot of me is saying that just because I am jealous, because moving and teaching abroad for a while is one of my dreams too ;)

I think if you regret not doing it at the moment, will you always regret it? That's something you have to consider. Yes, it's daunting - but then again, if you go out there and hate it, couldn't you just move back again early? It'll probably have a lot of ups and a lot of downs, and probably will change you a fair bit, but I bet it'll be something you'll never forget.

live your life fullest.
and sorry girl, but isn't it kind of cowardly to not decide those things by yourself.
it's your life and no one else can make this decision for you.
just live your life fullest- and I seriously think your heart already knows what to do!
Good Luck!!

I'm late here, but it's more than just 17 people. It's 19. Me and YOU:

"but I have never up and left my life for months at a time."

I did it once. For a year. In Hawaii. Wasn't easy but I have zero regrets and I'm now at a stage in my life where I wouldn't be able to do something like that again.

"Would this really be a scary thing?"

Yes. But if life isn't a little scary then it isn't a LOT of fun.

"Would I still come back and go back to my life as normal?"

Maybe...but if you didn't it would be because this was RIGHT for you.

"It is never easy to pick up from all your life and your friends and family and go away alone."

No...it isn't easy. Nothing worth doing is all that easy though...

"But, then again, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and if I don't do it soon, I will most likely never do it and will most definitely regret it."

Yup!

Much Love,
Mercedes

You should so totally do it! You won't regret it at all. In fact, you'd probably regret it more if you didn't go. Will you return the same? No, probably not. But I would venture a guess to say that you'll return a better, more confident version of yourself.
